Two Birches

These are a pair of trees that grew in my grandparents' backyard in Thunder Bay, (a northern city just touching the north shore of Lake Superior). Young trees, I watched them grow, summer to summer, as a kid.
The composition is very austere and the trees appear to be almost floating. With this I had in mind Taoist-influenced east-Asian brush painting work that makes use of a white background and can be intended to depict the nothingness out of which all things arise.
